REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master’s degree. Licensed through the SD Board of Examiners as a Speech-Language Pathologist.

 

Experience Desired: Experience within a School Setting.

 

Physical: Constant hearing, hand-eye and mind-eye coordination; frequent repetitive motions with wrists, scheduling, speaking, walking, talking and writing are required. A valid South Dakota drivers’ license and the ability to drive a car.

 

Other: Strong technology skills, excellent oral and written communication skills. Skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. Competence in completing assessments, developing interventions and consulting with others. Adhere to District’s Policies and Procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

1. Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement.
2. Provides a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of speech, language and hearing handicapped children.
3. Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing and referring suspected and identified speech and language disorders.
4. Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, hearing and language disorders.
5. Provides screening to identify speech and language handicapped children at regular intervals and at specified levels.
6. Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.
7. Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual student’s needs and correct existing speech or language disorders.
8. Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to supplement therapy with suggestions for the student’s daily activities.
9. Provides suggestions to regular classroom teachers for improving speech and language skills of developmental or mild disabilities when direct speech and language services are not necessary.
10. Provides information, support and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
11. Provides inservice education and serves as a consultant to teachers, school staff members and community members on topics concerning speech and language disorders and remediation.
12. Keeps thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services.
13. Maintains lists of referred, screened and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists and related services.
14. Compiles case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early developmental history and environmental history are deemed appropriate.
15. Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.
16. Strives to help promote safety, health, and comfort of all students within the school district.
17. Promotes a positive image of the West Central School District.
18. Performs other such duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools and Special Services Director.
