Humboldt Elementary School Principal

Teachers and classified employees

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:                                           Shall be properly certified according to the standards prescribed by the South Dakota Division of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Experience Desired:                        Minimum three years of teaching experience at level pertaining to assignment. Previous administrative experience preferred.

Physical:                                               Constant hand-eye and mind-eye coordination. Frequent walking, keyboarding, speaking, writing, bending, carrying, pushing, pulling, sitting, reaching, stooping, and turning. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

Other:                                                   Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, in addition, time management skills. Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, email, and internet. Ability to work with frequent interruptions and keep information confidential. Adhere to District’s Policies and Procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  1. Shall be responsible to the superintendent for the administration and operations of the assigned building.
  2. May delegate responsibility, but he/she is responsible to the superintendent of the results produced through the Principal.
  3. Shall observe the work of the teachers in their classrooms and serve as consultant for improving the curriculum.
  4. Shall make recommendations to the superintendent regarding course of study and important changes in the curriculum in the secondary and elementary schools.
  5. Shall make an annual inventory of equipment, textbooks, and supplies to the business manager at the end of each year.
  6. Shall make recommendations to the superintendent concerning building alterations, additions, and new equipment.
  7. Shall make personnel recommendations to the superintendent for the assigned building including all employment, promotion, assignment and dismissal of personnel.
  8. Shall hold weekly staff meetings.
  9. Shall assign duties to other members of the staff.
  10. Shall administer general and specific discipline and recommend students to the superintendent for permanent expulsion from secondary and elementary school in compliance with Standards and Guidelines for Providing Due Process of Law to the South Dakota student.
  11. Shall make reports to the superintendent at quarterly intervals concerning attendance and tardiness. All reports and records must be readily accessible.
  12. With the superintendent, shall direct the guidance and counseling program for the school.
  13. Shall plan the schedules of classes and teaching assignments subject to the approval of the superintendent and register and assign students to classes.
  14. Shall administer the rules and regulations of the Board of Education and the laws of the state pertaining to education.
  15. Shall develop, organize, and administer the extra curricular activity program subject to approval of the superintendent.
  16. Shall keep the staff, students, parents, and general public properly informed about the activities and progress of the school.
  17. Shall accept such responsibilities outside of the school district that are decided upon after a conference with the superintendent.
  18. Is encouraged to get involved with community organizations and accept certain social-civic responsibilities in the community.
  19. Shall keep himself/herself informed concerning educational progress by visiting other schools, circulating questionnaires, attending educational meetings, workshops, and short courses, and by reading and studying of educational literature.
  20. Shall confer with the superintendent for approval of all field trips or excursions conducted by his/her school groups.
  21. Shall approve all pupil-teacher activities that occur before and after school hours during the school year.
  22. Shall oversee and maintain student supervision of lunchroom.
  23. Shall report all significant accidents of students to the superintendent and the student’s parents immediately.
  24. Shall consult with the superintendent concerning important school business for which there is no policy or precedent to follow before making a decision or adopting a course of action.
  25. Shall be responsible for all supervision in the building, on the playground, bus loading area and athletic fields.
  26. It shall be his/her duty to maintain a cooperative working relationship with fellow administrators and members of the Board of Education.
  27. Shall be responsible for the immediate supervision of custodians and their work and maintenance of the school building. He/she must keep the superintendent completely and continuously informed as to the conditions of his/her school and activities herein.
  28. Through democratic administration, he/she shall work cooperatively with the teaching staff for the best interest of the students.
  29. Responsible for the security and safety of building, students, and staff.
  30. Shall be supervisor of the trust and agency fund and be responsible for maintaining a successful budget within the amount.
  31. Shall oversee the attendance, conduct and health of all pupils.
  32. Shall be responsible for the following:
    1. Evacuation drills in accordance with state statute and keep a record of dates and evacuation times.
    2. School enterprises and activities.
    3. Set rules to regulate and release of pupils from school for such reasons as medical and dentals appointments, illness, etc.
    4. Preparation and revision yearly of rules and regulations for Student Handbook.
    5. Be responsible for all extra-curricular activities.
    6. Shall be responsible for pupil registration and the recording and transfering of student records and grades to other schools.
  33. Shall organize the supervision of hallways, study halls, noon duty.
  34. Shall be at all home functions unless special arrangements are made for supervision with the approval of the superintendent. All building principals shall supervise at high school events, and a schedule will be established with the Activities Director and Superintendent for appropriate coverage at such events.
  35. Shall be responsible for the supervision and evaluation of teachers under his/her jurisdiction and shall submit to the superintendent a staff evaluation report of the status of each teacher relative to instructional skills, professional qualities, and personal qualities. This report shall be furnished to the board upon request. Teachers will be evaluated a minimum of once each semester during the three years of employment in the district. After three years of employment all teachers will be evaluated at least once each year.
  36. Shall recommend to the superintendent an itemized tentative budget of expenditures in connection with the high school administration upon request.
  37. Shall assign substitutes to fill vacancies caused by the temporary absence of staff members.
  38. Other duties as required by the board, superintendent or state law.
  39. Represents the School District professional in local, regional, state, and national affiliations’ as well as participating in said organizations.
  40. Cooperates with all departments for effective and efficient results.
  41. Promotes a positive image of the West Central School District and maintains good public relations with the community.
  42. Performs other duties as assigned.
